For those interested in culture and history, optional visits to nearby heritage sites like Patan Durbar Square or Bhaktapur can be arranged. If you are preparing for the Mount Kailash tour, this day can also be used to rest, repack, and ensure all personal gear is in order.

Today, after an early breakfast, begin your scenic drive from Kathmandu to Kerung (Kyirong), Tibet—the border town situated at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters. The journey takes you through the picturesque hills and river valleys of northern Nepal, passing through Syabrubesi before reaching the Rasuwagadhi border. Upon arrival at the Nepal-China border, you will complete immigration and customs formalities. After crossing the border into Tibet, you will meet your Tibetan guide and transfer to your hotel or guesthouse in Kerung. The change in altitude and environment is noticeable, so the remainder of the day is reserved for rest and acclimatization to prepare for the higher elevations ahead on the Mount Kailash Yatra.

Today is a rest and acclimatization day in Kyirong (Kerung), Tibet (2,700m) to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude before continuing the journey toward Mount Kailash. Kyirong, a peaceful border town nestled in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, offers a tranquil environment ideal for relaxation. You are encouraged to take light walks, stay well-hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity. This is also a good time to double-check your gear, rest, and mentally prepare for the spiritual and physical journey ahead. Your guide may also share additional information about Tibetan customs, high-altitude precautions, and the upcoming route to Saga.

After breakfast, begin your scenic drive from Kyirong to Saga (4,600m), a key transit town on the way to Mount Kailash. The journey takes approximately 5–6 hours, covering vast landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau, with views of snow-capped peaks, high-altitude grasslands, and occasionally nomadic settlements. As you gradually ascend, you’ll notice a significant change in altitude and terrain. Short breaks will be taken along the way to stretch and enjoy the stunning views. Upon arrival in Saga, check into your hotel and take the rest of the day to rest and further acclimatize. Staying hydrated and avoiding overexertion is essential as you prepare for the higher elevations ahead.

On this day, after an early morning breakfast, drive along the route to Mount Kailash and arrive at the sacred Lake (1 4,590m) which, more than any other place in the country, encapsulates its racing heartbeat and spiritual state of mind, Lake Manasarovar is the most sacred lake in Asia and an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bon-pos. The ride is long, 6-7 hours journey, but the scenery is impressive with the vast Tibetan plains, snow-capped mountains and occasionally wildlife such as yak and antelope to be spotted. The first (distant view) of Mount Kailash can be seen while you are approaching Lake Manasarovar.

After breakfast, depart from Lake Manasarovar and drive to Darchen, the gateway village to Mount Kailash. The drive is relatively short, usually taking about 1 to 1.5 hours, through stunning high-altitude terrain surrounded by rugged mountains and vast open plains. Upon arrival in Darchen, check into your guesthouse and take time to rest and prepare for the sacred Mount Kailash circumambulation (kora) starting the next day. Darchen is a quiet, remote village that serves as the spiritual base for pilgrims from around the world. This day is ideal for final preparations, gathering supplies, and acclimatizing to the altitude of approximately 4,670 meters.

Today begins your sacred trek from Darchen to Dirapuk, covering approximately 12 kilometers through breathtaking high-altitude landscapes. The trail gradually ascends as you make your way toward Dirapuk, a monastery and guesthouse situated at around 4,950 meters. Along the route, you will pass through remote villages, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and stunning views of Mount Kailash’s imposing south face. The trek is moderately challenging due to the altitude, so it’s important to pace yourself, stay hydrated, and take breaks as needed. Upon reaching Dirapuk, you’ll settle into the monastery guesthouse and have time to rest, preparing for the next day’s trek to the base camp of Mount Kailash.

The hardest but most rewarding portion of the Mount Kailash Kora trek is today’s. You’ll start the strenuous climb from Dirapuk to the Dolma La Pass, one of the route’s highest passes at an astounding 5,645 meters. Because of the rough terrain and thin air, the climb is difficult and requires careful pacing and good stamina, but the amazing views at the summit make every step worthwhile. You will be rewarded with expansive views of the surrounding valleys and peaks from the pass. The trail descends from Dolma La to Zuthulphuk, a secluded monastery set into the cliffs where you will spend the night. The entire hike is roughly 22 kilometers long.

After breakfast, you’ll trek approximately 10 kilometers downhill from Zuthulphuk back to Darchen, retracing part of your route with beautiful views of Mount Kailash’s northern face. The descent is gentler and provides a welcome relief after the challenging Dolma La Pass crossing. Upon arrival in Darchen, you’ll have some time to rest and freshen up before boarding a vehicle for the drive back to Saga. The drive covers a long stretch across the Tibetan plateau, allowing you to relax and reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just completed. Upon reaching Saga, you’ll check into your accommodation and have the evening to unwind and recover from the day’s travel.

Today, you will begin the journey back from Saga, driving through the vast Tibetan Plateau towards the border town of Kyirong (Kerung). After completing border formalities, you will cross into Nepal and continue your drive to Syabrubesi, a charming village nestled in the Himalayan foothills. The route offers stunning views of lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional Nepalese villages—a beautiful contrast to the stark Tibetan landscapes. This drive marks the end of your high-altitude adventure as you descend to lower elevations, allowing your body to relax and recover. Upon arrival in Syabrubesi, you can rest and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.

After arriving in Syabrubesi or Kyirong, you will continue your journey back to Kathmandu by road. The drive takes you through picturesque landscapes of hills, rivers, and rural villages, offering a final chance to soak in Nepal’s natural beauty. Depending on road and weather conditions, the trip usually lasts around 8 to 10 hours. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel where you can relax and reflect on your incredible Mount Kailash pilgrimage and Tibetan adventure

Today marks the end of your unforgettable journey. After breakfast, you will check out from your hotel and be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport or your preferred departure point for your onward flight to your next destination. We hope you carry wonderful memories of your Mount Kailash pilgrimage and Nepal adventures. Safe travels and we look forward to welcoming you again!

FAQs

Honestly, trekking up to Mount Kailash? That’s not your average touristy hike—it’s a wild mix of spiritual bootcamp and adventure, tucked way out in the boondocks of western Tibet. This mountain isn’t just a lump of rock, either. For Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon folks, it’s basically the center of the universe. Like, the spiritual WiFi router for the whole world, if you get what I mean.

People don’t just walk around it for fun—the Kailash Kora is this gnarly, 52-kilometer trek that’ll chew you up and spit you out if you’re not ready. We’re talking a couple of days, thin air, and a whole lotta blisters. But folks do it anyway, circling the mountain for a shot at spiritual spring cleaning, maybe some good karma, and—who knows—maybe a dash of enlightenment if the mountain’s feeling generous.

But hey, even if you’re not there for the soul-searching, the place is nuts. Jaw-dropping mountain views, air so crisp it practically slaps you awake, and a chance to rub elbows with Tibetan locals who, frankly, make surviving at that altitude look easy. It’s one of those trips that just socks you right in the gut with how small and awestruck you feel. Pure magic, if you’re asking me.

A Mount Kailash tour usually takes around 14 to 16 days from start to finish. This includes the time needed for arrival, acclimatization at higher altitudes, completing the full Kailash Kora trek (about 52 km), and travel between cities and border crossings. The extra days are important to help your body adjust to the high elevation and to ensure a safe and enjoyable pilgrimage. Some tours might be shorter or longer depending on the route taken, mode of transport, and pace of trekking, but two weeks is generally a good estimate to fully experience the journey.

During the Mount Kailash tour, the highest point you’ll reach is the Dolma La Pass, which stands at approximately 5,645 meters (18,520 feet) above sea level. The trek around Mount Kailash itself takes you through varying altitudes, generally ranging from about 4,500 meters (14,760 feet) in towns like Darchen and Saga, up to the pass. Because of the high elevation, proper acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness. The breathtaking views and spiritual significance at these heights make the challenge well worth it.

The best time to undertake a Mount Kailash tour is during the spring (April to early June) and autumn (September to October) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally stable with clear skies, mild temperatures, and minimal rainfall, making trekking conditions safer and more comfortable. Spring offers blossoming landscapes and pleasant days, while autumn provides crisp air and stunning mountain views. Summers can be wet and slippery due to the monsoon, and winters are extremely cold with heavy snowfall, which can block passes and make travel difficult. Planning your trip during spring or autumn ensures you’ll have the best chance to enjoy both the spiritual journey and the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.

On a Mount Kailash tour, accommodation varies depending on the location and infrastructure available. In major towns like Kathmandu and Lhasa, you can expect comfortable hotels with modern amenities, including hot showers, heating, and Wi-Fi. However, once you enter the remote Tibetan plateau, especially in places like Saga, Darchen, and near Mount Kailash itself, accommodations become much more basic. Guesthouses and lodges typically offer simple rooms with shared bathrooms and limited heating. Hot water may be scarce or available only at certain times. Staying in these modest lodgings is part of the authentic pilgrimage experience, so it’s best to come prepared for rustic conditions while enjoying the incredible spiritual and natural surroundings

During the Mount Kailash tour, meals vary depending on where you are on the route. In larger towns like Kathmandu, Lhasa, and Saga, you’ll find a good variety of restaurants offering both local Tibetan, Nepali, and some international dishes. As you move into more remote areas near Mount Kailash and along the trekking route, food options become simpler and more limited, typically consisting of Tibetan staples like tsampa (roasted barley flour), noodles, dumplings (momo), rice, and vegetable soups. Meat dishes, mainly yak or mutton, are also common. Due to the altitude and limited supplies, meals tend to be hearty but basic. It’s a good idea to carry some snacks and energy bars to keep you fueled during long trekking days.

Obtaining visas and permits for the Mount Kailash tour can be a bit challenging, but with proper planning and assistance, it’s definitely manageable. Travelers typically need a Chinese group visa and a Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet, as well as special permits for the Kailash region itself. The process involves submitting your passport, photos, and other documents several weeks in advance. It’s important to work with a reliable tour operator or travel agency who can help coordinate these permits and guide you through embassy requirements. While the paperwork and waiting times might feel complicated, most travelers complete it successfully without major issues as long as they follow the correct procedures.

Yes, travel insurance is highly recommended for the Mount Kailash tour. Given the remote location, high altitude, and physically demanding nature of the journey, having comprehensive travel insurance can provide peace of mind. Good insurance should cover medical emergencies, including altitude sickness treatment and evacuation, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and unexpected delays. Make sure your policy specifically includes coverage for high-altitude trekking and any adventure activities involved. It’s always best to review the terms carefully and inform your insurer about the nature of the trip before you depart
